We both use eyemasks to sleep.

I, for one, use it because I can only sleep if it's pitch black. At home, that's not a problem because my room only has one window, which has dark green blinds and a souvenir beach towel as a curtain, making it very very dark in there at night. At the dorm, however, sometimes my roommate is still up when I go to bed, and she'll have one of our many lights on (in our 11'6" x 14'8" room, we have two ceiling lights, two over-desk lights, and two bedside lamps. While they are rarely all on, there is usually at least one on, unless we're both sleeping). Besides, we have two windows (with white blinds and no curtains) and there are street lights outside, and because of our location in a corner of the building, the bright light in the stairwell is highly visible from our windows (through the window in the stairwell).

Wow, that was a long way to say that our room is never completely dark, no matter what.

Mine is an anxiety issue. I'm paranoid about not being able to get sleep at TU, so I still do all the things I used to do when I had a roommate (eyemask and earplugs). My room is pretty bright though, because I have vertical blinds and there are lights all over the place since my room overlooks the courtyard (which I believe means it faces East. Well, the sun comes through quite well either way.) And a large amount of light comes in through my door and the lights in the hall and stairwell right outside my room are, of course, always on.

At home, it's not an issue for me. I don't like light coming in from the windows, so I hang up fleece throw blankets or beach towels. But now that I have Mabel, there's a nightlight on in my room all the time. I sleep through it fine though.

That was a long way to say that it's just mental for me.
